Writing Assignment #3

 150 - 200 words, mimic tone/voice. Use imagination. Getting Millennial vibes


You walk beneath a tremendous, colossal anvil. You enter another room, but the anvil is still above you. As you stare at it, it seems to be uneasily teetering back and forth, leaving you to ponder its existence under the cover of its mysterious outstretching shadow. Its presence is unsettling, its energy, dark. You look up and focus your gaze on the various features of the anvil. Its awkward bulky form, the various dents and scars and, ... something stuck to the side, white with black half circles of some sort. Are those,  boobs? Aha they're actually paper receipts for all the foolish necessities you have purchased to sustain your lavish millennial lifestyle. It all comes together. The anvil is your debt. The anvil totally sucks man. Why can't the anvil be a lush assortment of contemporary pillows instead? How did it even get there? How long has it been there? You think back. You begin wonder if maybe stagnant wages and the ever-increasing cost-of-living piled on top of stiff student loans has anything to do with it. Maybe you should have just listened to the boomers; "save your money" "invest in real estate, it's that easy" you hear in your mind as you get back to your gourmet dinner of pizza rolls. Looks like they have finally cooled.

Writing Assignment #4

Out of the two options, the case study seems more appealing than the idea pitch. Firstly I would need to pick a business involved in Social Entrepreneurship and      1. Provide a description and analysis of the enterprise's mission/vision statement     2. A lean business model analysis     3. A prescriptive element that addresses a strategic weakness Candidates for me so far are DIFF Eyewear (Buy One-Give One) which donates glasses to developing countries, all though they are technically a charity. Another idea is the Susan G. Komen Foundation. These guys have had their share of controversy and would make an excellent class discussion if it would come to it.

Writing Assignment #8: Food Innovation

In researching food innovations, something that caught my interest had to do with micro-financing rural farmers in Africa. Part of Africa's agriculture problems has to do with farm financing. Looking at the North American farming system, it is very intertwined with financial institutions. Loans to purchase land, openly-traded forward-contracts to purchase crops at fixed prices, and various other channels to access capital mean that farmers can distribute their risk and returns evenly among more people. These various advancements have yet to reach Africa for a few reasons. Firstly, rural farmers in Africa tend to not have easy access to banks. This means that finding an institution to provide a loan can be quite challenging, forcing farmers to get creative in funding their farm.
